A process aimed at preserving data that has ceased to be of current use.

Archiving may be intermediate when, at the end of the current use phase, the data is still of administrative interest (for example to constitute evidence in the event of litigation). It may also be definitive if, at the end of the intermediate storage period, the data is of particular interest.
